Music, and those who compose and perform it, are often treasured as gifts to the world. Joy, tranquility, and the raw emotions of listening and enjoying music make it a universal experience for all.
Donald Ray Tomberlin, a lifelong musical artist, was one such individual who was blessed with a talent he shared with the world. He excelled in songwriting and piano, lending his talent to several Christian groups through singing, playing, and performing his original works nationwide.
He spent much of his time composing songs with his mother. His loved ones describe a book of songs the duo wrote as one of the most cherished family Christmas gifts they have.
In his life, Donald Ray was a quiet, giving, and extraordinarily kind man. Despite being born with cerebral palsy, he lived a life defined not by his disabilities but by his passion for music and his love for others.
Tomberlin worked tirelessly, bravely faced the world, and loved fiercely. His acts of silent bravery and quiet, yet herculean, acts of love are too numerous to count.
Donald Ray Tomberlin was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend who passed August 22, 2022, at 73.
Three of his dear nieces, Chiquitta Alexander, Lisa Barnes Wright, and Tonyia Barnes, joined forces to establish the Donald Ray Tomberlin Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Music in November of 2022 with a gift of $20,500.
This endowed scholarship, for students pursuing a music-related program of study, will support those displaying a financial need who have graduated from Pensacola High School and demonstrate a history of philanthropy and kindness to others.
Nearly one year, to the day, after Donald Ray’s passing last August, the Donald Ray Tomberlin Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Music will be awarded for the first time during the 2023 – 2024 school year, beginning on August 21.
His music, rich baritone voice, and spirit are missed most by his sister, Jane Dean; and his five nieces; including Chiquitta, Lisa, and Tonyia.
