PSC Financial Analyst, Val Martinez, couldn’t help but feel as though her life had come full circle when she was offered the opportunity to be a part of the institution that shaped her career. From dual enrolling as a high school student at Booker T. Washington High School, to earning her associates degree before transferring to Florida State University’s accounting program, Pensacola State College has been a part of Val’s story from the very beginning.
“When I was in school, we were often told as accountants that we should strive to be part of the Big Four. However, that lifestyle never felt like the right fit for me. I’ve always believed in supporting local businesses and institutions, so when I got the call to interview at PSC’s Bursar’s Office, I didn’t think twice,” Val shared. “Since then, I’ve made incredible friends and learned so much. What drives my passion is helping others see their goals as achievable rather than impossible.”
Nine years after joining the PSC Pirate family as an employee, Val still finds herself reflecting on the changes the College has seen over time and its significance to her as an institution.
“PSC is a huge part of Pensacola, and I’ve loved seeing how it has grown and expanded over the years. For me, PSC isn’t just a workplace; it’s a family tradition,” she expressed. “All of my family members have been students here! PSC plays such a vital role in shaping students’ futures, and being a part of that impact is what makes this place so special to me.”
The same passion that Val carries into her career also motivates her to give back to the college that has played such an important role in her and her family’s lives. As a dedicated donor, Val chooses to give to PSC scholarships that directly support students in pursuit of their dreams.
“I donate because I believe in what PSC stands for—education, opportunity, and community. I love that I can choose which scholarships to help fund, allowing me to support the programs that mean the most to me.”
Val is especially fond of the PSC Molly McGuire School of Culinary Arts, where she enjoys seeing students grow in their skills while partaking in meals prepared as part of their training. “It’s both adorable and fun to watch them transform into the professionals that they aspire to be. The entire experience is incredibly rewarding,” Val explains. “Giving back is my way of ensuring that every student has the resources they need to succeed, just like so many others have supported me along the way.”
